All about my home, Barbados
Barbados is a paradise. It is the most easterly island in the Caribbean sea. many people come to Barbados for the sun, sea and sand but visitors must always remember to protect themselves from the harmful effects of the sun. Barbados is blessed with white sandy beaches and year long tropical sunshine. The friendliness of the Bajan people, the wonderful nightlife and the variety of places of interest are some of the things which cause people to return to this idyllic setting time and time again. There are four festivals which take place every year. There is the Jazz Festival which takes place in January. Artistes from all over the world are invited to this festival and it is very well attended by patrons. The Holetown Festival takes place in February and this consists of a Queen Show, a parade through the street and a display of craft. In April, the Oistins Fish Festival takes place on the Easter weekend just after the end of the lenten season. Many people go to the festival to watch the Fish Boning Competition and the variety of activities taking place there. Oistins is a weekend hangout spot with many tasty fish dishes being offered for sale. The biggest Festival however takes place from mid July and culminates in a grand "kadooment" on the first Monday in August. The "kadooment is where people don beautifully made, colourful costumes and parade through the street to the beat of melodious calypso tunes composed by our very talented
musicians and calypsonians. Other activities like :"Soca on the Hill", "The Pick of the Crop" calypso competition, "Party Monarch" and "The People's Monarch" are held during this period. These are usually very well attended and a good time is had by all. To be continued..... |
